Event Detail:

We are excited to invite Ms. Colleen Meyers, who teaches in the Center for Teaching & Learning at the University of Minnesota, to give MN-CITA members a talk on presentation and communication skills. Colleen is the co-author of Communicate: Strategies for International Teaching Assistants and The Pronunciation for Success teacher-training materials and self-study course. She has over twenty years' experience working with ITAs from China. Colleen recently completed a Fulbright Grant in Ankara, Turkey.

  • Hour 1: Organization & Multimedia

    • how to make good ppt. slides
    • how to organize a presentation for a US audience
    • phrasal stress & pausing
    • practice in pairs/small groups
  • Hour 2: Establishing Rapport
    • how to make small talk with Americans
    • non-verbal communication
    • having an interesting opening
    • tone of voice
    • practice in small groups/pairs
  • Hour 3: Handling Questions
    • cross-cultural differences in responding to questions (China vs. US)
  • ARAG strategy
  • lots of practice in small groups
